In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, she hears Persephone’s cries and aids Demeter in her search for her daughter, bearing twin torches that cut through the dark. After Persephone’s return, she becomes her companion and attendant in the Underworld. Often depicted with torches, keys, and serpents coiled at her side, Hekate stands at every threshold. Offerings were left to her at crossroads during the dark of the moon, where dogs were said to howl at her passing.
